The Atlantic has launched a conversation around eye exams and routine eye care in America. Why is it so hard for Americans to get prescription glasses?
Many experts in the field of health differ in their opinions, with those who stand by the current protocol of acquiring glasses and lenses defending routine eye exams because they can reveal tumors or other detrimental health issues; others believe it should be much easier for those who cannot afford eye exams and glasses to get the prescriptions at “a moment’s notice.”
After all, it can take weeks (or in some cases, months) for anyone in the U.S. to get a new pair of glasses.
The debate on eye care in the U.S. was inspired by Yascha Mounk’s piece that “argued that vision-wear rules in the United States are too strict—and that Americans should be allowed to buy any pair of glasses or set of contact lenses at a moment’s notice.”
