According to a Wednesday announcement from Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Virginia has become the first state to end statewide chronic veteran homelessness, meaning that every veteran in the state, other than those that declined shelter, have housing. The official press release attributed the initiative’s success to the utilization of a “housing-first” model as well as active collaboration between public housing groups, local utility companies, and the Department of Veterans affairs.
Virginia has housed 1,432 veterans since October 2014. State leaders hope to use this milestone as a springboard into an initiative to end all statewide homelessness by 2017.
