Unsurprisingly, the U.S. is the biggest importer of avocados from Mexico, and while the administration focuses on discriminating against Mexican immigrants, it welcomes imports of avocados by the ton.

Last year, the US imported 914,530 tons of avocados, contributing to the over-cultivation of the fruit. Scientists believe that the over-cultivation could lead to environmental hazards in the next 5 decades, including an increase in soil and water pollution, the loss of forests, and reduction in biodiversity in Mexico.

“The state [Michoacán] has lost about 50% of its natural vegetation and much of that loss is due to avocados,” said biologist, Alejandra Blanco Macias, as reported by IB Times.
