US Border Patrol Launches Plan to Collect DNA Samples from Undocumented Immigrants

The US Border Patrol is launching a plan to collect DNA samples from immigrants who are undocumented and seeking asylum in the U.S.

The DNA samples will be stored as part of the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System – a system used for linking violent crimes by making the DNA available to investigators. The DNA Fingerprint Act, which was first passed by Congress in 2005, will be “fully implemented” to collect “DNA samples from anyone arrested, facing charges or convicted — and from any non-U.S. citizens “who are detained under the authority of the United States.”

Officials have defended the re-implementation of the act, saying that it “”could be essential to the detection and solution of crimes they may have committed or may commit in the United States.”
