Earlier this week, the University of Texas-Austin announced that in 2020 it plans to offer some low-income, in-state undergrads the opportunity to receive full-tuition scholarships if families qualify.

Through a $160 million endowment, the university would offer scholarships to students of families who make under $65,000.

“Recognizing both the need for improved access to higher education and the high value of a UT Austin degree, we are dedicating a distribution from the Permanent University Fund to establish an endowment that will directly benefit students and make their degrees more affordable,” said Chairman of the Board of Regents, Kevin Eltife, after the University of Texas System Board of Regents voted on it earlier this week, as reported by NPR.

Room and board will not be covered by the scholarships, but tuition and fees, which are under $11,000 would be covered, making higher education more accessible to students in Texas.
