U.S. Rural Areas Experience Spike in Obesity

Rural areas across America are experiencing the biggest spikes in obesity among adults and children alike, according to a new analysis of an on-going survey by the National Health and Nutrition Examination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention run the survey which examines Americans both through interviews and physical exams.

The survey found that obesity among youth rose to 18 percent between 2013 and 2016, compared to 15 percent the years before.

In rural areas specifically, obesity rates have rocketed to 22 percent for children between the ages of two to nine. Meanwhile, the rate of obesity among adults has reached 39 percent for those 20 years and older.

Severe obesity has been most common among women living in rural areas, the report found.
