Trump Administrator Considers Taking Student Loan Responsibility from Department of Education, Giving it to Treasury

Earlier this week, in a resignation letter from the Head of the Education Department’s federal student aid program, potential changes in how student debt is managed and overseen were revealed.

The Trump administration seeks to transfer responsibility of student debt management from the Education Department to the Treasury Department.

As the new budget proposal seeks to remove funding for the Department of Education by more than 50 percent, Trump and DeVos seek to undermine the power of the department significantly, especially if the agency loses its ability to oversee more than $1 trillion in student debt.
