This may be the oldest art in the world! Newly discovered prehistoric paintings found inside of a cave in Indonesia depict humans and animals.

Scientists believe the ancient cave art is more than 44,000 years old.

Descriptions of the art appear in the journal Nature, including guesses that this may be the oldest art depicting a “story” of interaction between humans and nature.

The cave art was discovered in 2017.

“When you do an archaeological excavation, you usually find what people left behind, their trash. But when you look at rock art, it’s not rubbish—it seems like a message, we can feel a connection to it,” said lead study author Maxime Aubert, archaeologist and geochemist at Australia’s Griffith University, as reported by National Geographic and Yahoo.
