Teens Urge for More Suicide Prevention Programs in Rural Areas

At least eight of the top 10 states with the highest number of suicide rates are in rural regions of the West, including in Colorado.

Several states are affected by high suicide rates but the number in the west region are skyrocketing. NPR reported that in a recent poll, respondents said that they knew someone affected by suicide.

Suicide prevention has now become a huge priority for rural regions of the country, and certain pop-up programs have been adopted in high schools to help students achieve mental health. Not only has a surge in programs come from increasing suicide rates, but also in response to students asking for more programs and preventative measures to be taken across high schools.

Researchers have found that a combination of poor economic opportunities and no jobs has led to high suicide rates.
