Earlier this week the Supreme Court ruled in favor of not allowing public sector unions to collect fees from non-members.

Up until now, legislation allowed for unions, including teacher unions, to charge fees to non-members because they are still covered and protected by collective bargaining agreements, such as teachers and teacher unions.

“Employees must choose to support the union before anything is taken from them,” wrote Justice Alito.

Those in support of the decision say more teachers will be able to opt out of paying hundreds of dollars to be in a union.

On the other hand, those who oppose the decision say it will present major obstacles for teacher unions, including loss of funding, loss of membership from teachers who will choose to not be a part of it altogether, and will have less power to push for education reform.
