Teachers Contemplating Arming Themselves Against School Violence

With the recent surge of gun related mass murders on school campuses, many teachers have begun to take steps in defending themselves and their students.

Across the country, self defense courses have been marketed to helping teachers arm themselves with firearms in the case of a campus emergency.

Additionally, the Department of Education is contemplating a proposal that would allow school districts to pay for guns and gun training through a grant program.

While many agree students need to become better protected within their classrooms, others argue the proposal will place more stress on teachers who are already concerned about campus safety.

“None of us are trained to respond to threats in the way law enforcement is,” said Texas teacher Shanna Peeples.
