Museums and Galleries Work Toward Making Art Accessible to Blind People

Museums and galleries are working on ways to make art more accessible to everyone, including people who are blind.

Developments like “alt text” which is a very specific description of any given art that is imbedded into its web code, has helped to make art more accessible for those who are low-vision and blind.

The process of being more inclusive in the world of art has admittedly been difficult for many galleries and museums who have had lawsuits filed against them due to a lack of innovation in making art more accessible.

Many, in fact, have viewed “accessibility requirements grudgingly, as a costly way to avoid costlier lawsuits,” writes Art News.

“Businesses and nonprofits with the best intentions can find themselves confused and overwhelmed as to where they should start.”

Even then, many have worked to find news ways of generating descriptions retroactively for thousands of art works. Apps, groups, workers and volunteers have all had a hand in creating descriptions for art to improve accessibility and experts believe AI will be able to take care of generating accurate descriptions in the future.
