Libraries Contributing to Discrimination of Immigrants

In light of recent immigrant deportations, many activists are condemning libraries for discriminating against undocumented children.

Many libraries require a government-issued identification to apply for a library card, leaving many young students without a safe space to study or explore.

Although libraries are available to all citizens regardless of legal status, many immigrants feel disenfranchised from public sectors.

“Denying people access to a public service is getting in the way of what it means to be public,” said library technologist Jessamyn West.

Education advocates are encouraging individuals to examine their local library’s regulations to help extend services to immigrants.
