A new survey by NPR surveyed more than 3,000 households across the U.S. to find out how Americans were dealing with health needs and if they were affected by cost.
The survey found that at least one in five people had delayed, postponed or completely put off going to an appointment purely because of the high cost.
Additionally, the survey found that responses were affected by age. In general, at least one-third of people under 35 said that they had put off a doctor’s visit due to cost, while only 8 percent of those 65 and older said the same. Approximately 41 percent of the younger population also said they had struggled with cost of health care or paying for a service, while again, only 11 percent of those 65 and older said the same.
The survey found that one of the biggest concerns for the younger population was paying for prescriptions. Experts say prescriptions are becoming more expensive and creating a higher out-of-pocket price for Americans.
