This week, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down congressional district maps in North Carolina that, the court maintained, practiced racial gerrymandering.
“A state may not use race as the predominant factor in drawing district lines unless it has a compelling reason,” Justice Elana Kagain wrote for the majority.
Voters in North Carolina who were against the district divisions argued that African-Americans were unfairly excluded from other districts, and packed into one district, leading to their lack of representation across the state.
