According to researchers at UC Berkeley, the number of students suffering from anxiety has increased due to stresses associated with higher education, such as financial burdens and more time spent using technology.

The study found that the number of students who reported suffering from anxiety increased from 10 percent in 2008 to 20 percent in 2018 and increased as students got closer to their graduation date.

Additionally, researchers found that people of color and transgender students experienced more anxiety than anyone else.

Researchers assessed 9 years worth of data from the National College Health Assessment survey and interviews with Berkeley students who suffered from anxiety.

Overall, researchers were able to identify a series of trends among students in higher education who suffered from more anxiety, including having financial hardships, spending lots of time on their digital devices and interestingly, those who had mothers with a college degree or higher education also experienced more anxiety.
