According to a previous report from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 50,000 people died from drug overdoses (2015), and of those deaths, 63 percent involved an opioid.
Abuse of heroin alone accounts for one in four overdoses in the U.S.
A new study published in the JAMA Psychiatry found that the number of heroin users in the last two decades alone increased by five-fold, and the greatest increase was among white males.
The greatest increases were also seen among people with a high school education or less and among people living in poverty.
While heroin and opioids have the best treatment medications available, only 10 percent of those with a heroin substance abuse disorder ever receive treatment.
