A new study discovered a disturbing correlation between young people who spend several hours on screens and being diagnosed with depression or anxiety.

The study published in the journal Preventive Medicine Reports analyzed data from more than 40,000 children to teen-aged youths through the National Survey of Children’s Health.

Overall the study found a strong connection between spending more than 7 hours on screens (not including for homework-related purposes) and depression and also found those children to be more easily distracted, and had more problems making friends and finishing tasks.

Researchers from the study have previously found links between spending lots of time on phone screens and having trouble sleeping, as well as found emotional problems to be more prevalent in those same children.
