New research found that inflation of students’ grade point averages (GPAs) were the highest in private independent schools.

Grade inflation between 1998 and 2016 was about an 8% increase in private independent schools, compared to urban, public schools, with a .6% increase.

While data indicated that GPAs were on the rise during this time period, SAT scores actually declined.

“Higher grades enable children from such private schools to gain acceptance to the most elite colleges, which, in turn, helps them to get better jobs upon graduation,” reported QZ.

Furthermore, college admissions officers have responded to the National Association for College Admission Counseling that grades matter the most, versus SAT scores, when determining whether a student will be admitted into a university.

Researchers say that although GPAs of students in private schools are higher, it is likely that rich parents of students who can afford private schools in the first place are aggressively pushing teachers to boost their grades.
