According to a new study by Energy Innovation, coal production is more costly than renewable energy, including solar and wind energy.

Researchers found that more than 74 percent of the coal fleet in the U.S. providing electricity that altogether costs more than renewable energy. It is likely that coal will very quickly be replaced due to its high costs.

Furthermore, renewable energy costs less today than it did a few years ago due to better technology and higher demand, which also means coal plants have suffered and are slowly becoming too expensive to maintain.

According to the report, electricity generation from renewable resources has doubled since 2008, accounting for more than 17 percent of the U.S.’s electricity generation, which also has positive implications for the environment.
