Study Finds 20 Percent of Young Adults in the US Are Prediabetic

A new study found that 1 in 5 young adults in the US are prediabetic.

The study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics notes that these numbers have increased over the last decade, and still continue to increase, putting more young people at risk.

The numbers come down to an estimate of “18% among adolescents, ages 12 to 18” and about “24% among young adults ages 19 to 34.”

Experts of CDC say this was rarely an issue in the past, but now more young people are overweight, which is closely related to diabetes.

Researchers urge the need for “primary and secondary prevention efforts tailored to the young segment of the US population.”
