Students at the University of California, Davis are urging the creation of an environmental justice degree program in order to explore the social justice issues pertaining to the environment.

The student group entitled “Environmental Justice for Underrepresented Communities” (EJUC) states that current environmental degree programs fail in maintaining a multiracial staff and covering topics that impact marginalized and oppressed groups.

In an open letter and petition for the new course, the group states the new environmental justice degree program will develop “a mentorship program for underrepresented and underserved students in the department.”

Due to the students’ efforts in spreading awareness about the issues pertaining to the environment, Marcel Holyoak, chair of the UC-Davis Environmental Science and Policy Department, is considering to offer the environmental justice degree.

“Both the department and I intend to do what we can to facilitate and create such change,” explained Holyoak.
