Health officials have found that the rates of sexually transmitted diseases, including Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, are on the rise within the state of Massachusetts and across the nation. Growing rates are found most commonly among groups of minorities and young people.
The director of the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences, Kevin Cranston, said that STDs are usually treatable but most cases remain undiagnosed, which could lead to infertility and a number of health issues.
The Center for Disease Control pointed out that the growing popularity of dating apps could also be a contributing factor to the rising STD rates.
According to the state Department of Public Health, approximately 24,000 cases of Chlamydia, 3,688 cases of gonorrhea infections, and 792 cases of syphilis were reported in 2015.
