The Stanford Social Innovation Review maintains that foundations and nonprofit organizations need to pair up with labor unions to help fight social and economic inequalities in America.
Historically, labor unions have served minority and marginal communities of workers to protect them against discrimination and unfair laws.
“Unions and nonprofits are natural allies, sharing many of the same concerns about health care, education, housing, social justice, and the environment,” says Eric Nee, managing editor of SSIR.
Nonprofits must invest more time in working closely with unions to overcome obstacles of inequality across all sectors.
Initiatives to tackle economic inequality have been growing in numbers among foundations, as consciousness about the costs of social inequality grows.
Previous studies have found that social inequality has negative effects on all areas of life for those who are affected the most, including on physical and mental health.
