South Carolina Education Ranks Last In U.S.

According to the U.S. News’ recent rankings of “Best States”, South Carolina ranked number 50th in the nation.

Part of the reason is because state leaders have not expanded South Carolina’s educational special needs program, and have not provided adequate options for low-income students.

South Carolina’s education superintendent Molly Spearman argued that the ranking was based on only one test, and is therefore not accurately representative of the quality of the state’s education.

However, former Chief Justice Jean Toal stated in 2014 that, “Spending fails to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a minimally adequate education. Rather, the evidence demonstrates that there is a clear disconnect between spending and results.”
