The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) hosts the Art Beyond Sight program for persons with visual impairments once a month, giving people the gift of art through a different experience.
Assisted by both guide dogs and museum docents, groups meet together to take a tour of art through the museum as docents describe in great detail the artworks that stand before them.
They also offer them historical context and back-stories, as well as answering questions in the process to create rich experiences for participants.
For many elder persons who have lost their vision, the experience is exciting as docents use descriptions of familiar scenes to describe the art.
Museum leaders see the program as a tool for “bringing art to a diverse audience.”
