Scientists Create Insulin-producing Cells for Diabetics

Scientists have created insulin producing cells for diabetics. Although they haven’t yet been tested on humans, there have been clinical trials testing the transplant of the insulin-cells into diabetics.

There has been some success, but in general the immune systems of persons with diabetes strongly attack the insulin-producing cells.

UCSF bioengineers are working to create a more effective method to transplant the cells and protect them against immune rejection.

Meanwhile, scientists hope to develop the practice over the years through clinical trials.
