Within the next half decade, some of the world’s largest ecosystems could go spiral and disappear.
The study published in the journal Nature Communications suggests that the “the speed of collapse is surprisingly disproportionate for large ecosystems.”
Large ecosystems collapse at a faster rate than do smaller ones, even though they would take longer than a smaller ecosystem to collapse overall.
Deforestation, overfishing and activities that contribute to global emissions are just a few of the reasons that these large ecosystems could face downfall.
Some scientists believe the Amazon is reaching – or has reached, its tipping point. Deforestation and drought have already led to destruction in the Amazon, and scientists believe its unique ecosystem will begin to release the carbon its been storing away.
