Last week, the San Diego Unified School District had to deal with angry crowds of people protesting the launch of an anti-bullying campaign to provide safe spaces for Muslim students.
Protesters argued that the district was violating the separation of church and state.
They also argued that “the district was giving special treatment to Muslim students.”
The school district argued that the effort to create safe spaces for Muslim students is an effort to help create a safe campus for all students. The reality is that Muslim students face discrimination on a daily basis because of their religion, and many of them also deal with constant bullying; according to a 2015 survey, 55 percent of American Muslim students who were surveyed in California said they were bullied because of their religion.
