Hundreds of workers and staff in the UC system are reporting frequent food insecurity and hunger, a new survey indicates.

A survey conducted by the Teamsters union found that 2,900 workers in the University of California system sometimes skip out on meals, much of the time because they cannot afford to eat.

With meager pay and high rent, especially in cities like Irvine and San Francisco, many workers across the UC system have recounted instances in which they will go without a meal.

While UC officials acknowledge that the claims are “troubling,” they also note that the survey and information has been released in a time when the system is processing negotiations with the union.

A “great public institution” should not be adding to the increasing financial hardship that come with rising prices, says union secretary-treasurer, Jason Rabinowitz, but should instead “be part of the solution.”
