Although more schools provide students with diverse classes on human sexuality, abstinence-advocating programs have been labeled ineffective by some researchers.
According to a report published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, programs that only promote abstinence fail to prevent teenagers from engaging in sexual activities.
The findings also indicate that abstinence education does not reduce rates of teenage pregnancies or STDs.
Laura Lindberg, coauthor of the study and a research scientist at the Guttmacher Institute, explained that abstinence-only programs “leave our young people without the information and skills that they need.”
“We fail our young people when we don’t provide them with complete and medically accurate information,” she added.
