Red Cross “Wasted” $6M Funds Meant to Fight Ebola

Red Cross confirmed on Friday that well over $6 million of the $124 million meant to help fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa went to waste and were “misappropriated, diverted, and illegally taken.”

More than 11,000 people’s lives were lost across Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea between 2014 and 2016.

During an investigation, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies expressed their outrage at their findings regarding how the millions of dollars in funding were handled.

Investigators uncovered fraud related to inflated prices in relief items, in billing practices by a service provider, payroll and volunteer incentives, as reported by TIME.
