Due to the recent government administration’s orders on deportation, many illegal immigrants are refusing to seek medical care for fear of being exiled from the US.
According to the Migrant Clinicians Network, two-thirds of health care officials report patients are more reluctant to receive adequate medical care.
Health care officials worry the fear of being deported will cause many immigrants to be ill, jeopardizing the safety of themselves and their families.
Studies have indicated that those from low-income families are more likely to suffer from diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure, and many have found these issues are impacting the immigrant communities.
“Patients who are already sick will have a much harder time getting better,” said Dr. Kathleen R. Page, co-director of Centro SOL, a health care center for Latinos.
