This year there are only 45 days of open enrollment for those purchasing health insurance on their own, between the dates of November 1 and December 15.

NPR has put together a list of pointers to consider while shopping for ACA coverage for the new year.

1. Despite efforts by the Trump administration to boot persons with pre-existing conditions from paying the same as anyone else without pre-existing conditions for a set of comprehensive benefits, the Affordable Care Act’s rules will still protect persons with pre-existing conditions from paying more.

2. Fines for not having health coverage still apply. The fine is over $600 at the end of the year when taxes are due, or 2.5 percent of the person’s income – whichever amount is greater. There are certain ways to file for exemption if you cannot afford insurance.

3. Research and choose a plan wisely, because automatic renewal of insurance will happen the day after open enrollment ends (December 16) and the user will not be able to change that plan until open enrollment for 2019.
