The late philanthropist Phyllis Brissenden, who was 86 years old when she passed away, left behind a $45 million donation for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.

Her donation is being praised as one of the largest ever given to an opera house, and the largest the theater has ever recieved.

“We are profoundly humbled by and grateful for this extraordinary gesture of generosity,” said Andrew Jorgensen, the Opera Theatre’s General Director.

Brissenden had been a long time supporter of the theater and had donated to the organization many times before.

“We knew Phyllis was planning to leave a bequest to Opera Theatre, but we had no idea just how significant it would be…We feel deeply fortunate that this gift allows us to reach for even greater levels of artistic excellence and community impact,” wrote Jorgensen, as reported by People.
