One Million New Cases of STIs Reported Every Day

A new report from the World Health Organization revealed that more than one million new cases of STIs are contracted every day, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis and syphilis.

There are at least 376 million infections every year, sometimes with one person contracting multiple STIs or being reinfected later that year.

“These infections indicate people are taking risks with their health, with their sexuality and with their reproductive health,” said Dr. Melanie Taylor, lead author of the report and medical epidemiologist at the WHO department of Reproductive Health and Research.

Though many of these STIs are treatable, if they are left without care or go undetected for a long time, they can lead to serious health problems.
