A survey published Thursday by New York City’s Cultural Affairs Department has found that, although they exceed the diversity of arts organizations on a national level, the city’s arts sector does not reflect the diversity of its demographics.
“The survey found that New York City’s cultural work force is 61.8 percent white, 35.4 percent minority groups, and 53.1 percent female, while the city’s residents are 33 percent white and 52 percent female, according to the 2010 U.S. census,” reports the New York Times. The survey also found that there tends to be less diversity in larger arts institutions.
With this data, the Cultural Affairs Department plans to use new funding efforts and a partnership with the City University of New York to find solutions to improve arts diversity.
