In the U.S. the number of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease is over 5 million and researchers estimate the number will grow to reach 7 million by 2025.
Deaths caused by the disease have doubled since 2000, and if no new treatments are developed the number of persons with Alzheimer’s will reach more than 13 million by 2050.
The prevalence and growing number of deaths caused by the disease leads health experts to believe that Alzheimer’s could create great stress on more families and on the healthcare system. Already more than $277 billion was spent on patients with Alzheimer’s.
The total estimated cost of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s is approximately $329,000 and families are faced with paying a large sum of that portion from out of pocket.
“This year’s report illuminates the growing cost and impact of Alzheimer’s on the nation’s health care system, and also points to the growing financial, physical and emotional toll on families facing this disease,” Keith Fargo of the Alzheimer’s Association told US News.
