According to new data released this week, gender confirmation surgeries went up by 19 percent in 2016, compared to the previous year.
A survey of plastic surgeons revealed that more ‘gender confirmation surgeries’ were performed for various reasons – including expanded coverage through health care programs and also a general increase in acceptance of transgender people, some doctors say, as reported by NBC. More than 3,200 surgeries were performed, of which more than half were on male-to-female patients.
Of those surgeries, only .5 percent included gender reassignment surgery, while the rest included other procedures on the face and chest.
In a survey of more than 28,000 transgender adults, half of transgender women reported that they cannot afford to have the surgeries they hoped to have.
