Number of Black Children Taking Their Own Lives Grows

The number of black children between the ages of 5 and 12 have been committing suicide at overwhemingly higher rates in recent years, “at roughly twice the rate” of white children, as reported by US News.

A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that younger black children are committing suicide at higher rates and yet it is unusual that children so young to take their own lives.

The study which is based on data from 2001 to 2015 could not find a specific reason for the increase in suicides among young black children.

Poverty, nutrition, violence and racism are all factors that are tied to gaps in health and wellness between black and white children, however, and researchers noted that it is disturbing to find the numbers are in line with gaps between health and wellness between black and white children, again attributed to factors like poverty and violence.
