Nonprofit Offers Students Free Textbooks

In the spring of last year, University of Vermont students Javier Garcia-Bernardo, Ben Kaufman, and Alex Perkins formed the nonprofit Books4Equality, with the intention of drastically reducing, if not eliminating, the exorbitant costs of textbooks for college students. The operation is essentially a free library with an online database for anyone to search, view and borrow donated books.

The Books4Equality library currently holds over 1,800 textbooks, calculators, and iClickers available to students with a UVM email. When books and equipment become outdated or are no longer used for UVM courses, the nonprofit plans to seek out organizations, schools, and libraries to that would accept them as donations.
