In New York City there are more than 63,000 homeless individuals relying on shelters in the city and of that population, at least 24,000 are children.
The city’s mayor announced plans to help nonprofit developers acquire buildings to create residential spaces for permanent housing for homeless individuals and families.
Temporary housing sites will be transformed into permanent housing options that are more affordable for the families who are currently living in overcrowded and uncomfortable shelters.
At least 25 cluster sites have been identified for the affordable housing initiative, which will provide more than 1,000 homes.
Over the next half decade the city hopes to create more than 10,000 housing units.
