A new study published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics linked drinking tap water while pregnant to lower IQs in newborns.

The controversial study was published with an Editor’s note, according to the Daily Beast, because the journal was concerned about publishing a study that would completely challenge public health standards.

Fluoridated tap water has been touted by public health professionals for preventing tooth decay, but the new study could pose new concerns for mother’s to-be and families all across the U.S.

The study essentially outlines the dangers posed to the fetus’s brain development and their IQ in the long-term.
