Two cases of the plague have been identified in Santa Fe County, the New Mexico Department of Health stated.

Following the year’s first confirmed case of the plague that affected a 63-year-old man, two women, aged 52 and 62, were diagnosed and hospitalized.

With all three patients living in Santa Fe County, health officials in the area are attempting to identify the cause of the outbreak.

The plague is usually transmitted through contact with infected fleas, rodents, or other dead animals.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, there are around 7 cases of the plague per year.
