The Permanency for Children Act could potentially help connect children in the foster care system to their “forever families” much quicker through a new system.

The legislation calls for a process that merges documentation for children at both state and federal level in order to speed up the process for finding a child’s biological father and notifying them.

The current system uses several “disconnected” registries that “leaves gaps in the adoption and dependency process,” according to authors of the Permanency for Children Act (HR 3092), leaving adoptive families to some level of uncertainty.

A single search system could allow case managers to more efficiently locate biological fathers of children who are up for adoption, “allowing them the chance to assert or terminate their parental rights.”

This could help prevent future concerns over custody and connect children with their new families.
