New Legislation Addresses Racial Justice

According to new research, in the state of Vermont, people of color are more likely to encounter law enforcement, and African-Americans are incarcerated ten times more than white people.

To address racial disparity within the state, new legislation will establish a panel that investigates and offers suggestions in order to maintain racial justice within the criminal systems.

The bill, called H.308, requires a policy on impartial policing. Representative Diana Gonzalez, a co-sponsor of the House bill, called the criminal justice system “the last stop of inequities”. Representative Kevin “Coach” Christie said the legislation will give the state flexibility to provide a commission with a broader scope.
