New Cholesterol Guidelines Highlight High Risks for Women

In collaboration with doctors from Johns Hopkins, the American Heart Association has developed new guidelines for treating high cholesterol and for heart attack prevention.

Among those guidelines are recommendations for doctors to help their patients reduce cholesterol through healthier diets and exercise, and also keeping those levels at less than 70 in high-risk patients.

According to data, at least one in every 3 Americans has high cholesterol which can lead to fatty plaque build-ups and pose dangers to the arteries.

The new guidelines include insights on some of the factors that put women at risk of heart disease and heart failure, including early menopause. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women in the United States, as reported by The Business Journals.
