Nebraska lawmakers passed a bill that would help support human trafficking survivors as they recover from their pasts.

The new law allows criminal convictions to be removed from the records of individuals when they were previously trafficked.

Lawmakers decided that survivors can ask judges to expunge their criminal records for any offenses they committed while under the influence of their traffickers.

Typically, women and girls are often trafficked and become involved in prostitution due to violence and drugs administered to them by their captors.

The decision to pass the bill is part of the state’s focus in implementing harsher punishments to traffickers rather than their victims.
