According to a new study by Pew Research Center, the number of children living with a single parent is higher in the U.S. than it is in the majority of other countries.
The study examined 130 countries and found that in the U.S., nearly a quarter of children (23%) are living with just one parent, whereas the average for other countries was around 7 percent.
However, children are more likely to be living with a parent than with an extended family relative, like a grandparent or aunt and uncle. Furthermore, children in the U.S. live in smaller households, of 3-4 people, which generally means there are more resources to go around. In other countries, the number of people in a household is generally higher and therefore resources become fewer.
