Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe a mass extinction could impact aquatic species within the next few decades.

Examining previous eradication patterns, researchers found the ocean’s fast absorption of carbon dioxide could cause thousands of species to become extinct.

“Once a threshold is breached, the carbon cycle, and the Earth system more generally, are at risk of becoming unstable,” said the study’s author Daniel Rothman.

“Looking at past data, crossing the threshold is associated with mass extinction,” he added.

According to his research, Rothman expects the oceans’ threshold of 310 gigatons of carbon to collapse by the year 2100.
